A Tested Booklist for Admission Tests of Humanities Students

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

A young student trying to find a book in a university library

Greetings, I am Rawnak Rangan, a 1st-year law student at the University of Dhaka.

As someone who participated and got selected for my 1st-choice subjects in all university admission tests that I participated in in the last admission season, I faced a very common problem like the majority of students: I had very little proper and personalized advice from a few people who got into the department that I intended to study in (yes, I attended a coaching centre for my admission tests, but they had more talented students to take care of, so, I was almost on my own).

So, that was already confusing as different mentors suggested different ways to study and you are going to face this dilemma too!

I had to ask everyone for their advice; especially on what books to read for the entrance exams at Dhaka University; and then try those out for myself. It was too risky to blindly buy a book and then discover that it was full of mistakes or not good enough to serve the purpose.

Unsurprisingly, one small mistake or 0.25/ 0.20-mark deduction in admission exams can lead to you missing out on your dream subject; or even your dream university! (I would have a far better merit rank if I did not make various silly mistakes.

Thus, you must choose your study materials (e.g., books to read, notes, sheets etc.) very carefully, as the admission season is already brief and challenging; in both academics for the entrance tests and life in general during the admission period.

Before jumping into the solutions, here are the merit positions I accomplished on the admission tests of the University of Dhaka (DU) last year:

A Unit (Humanities): 19th

B Unit: 87th

I hope that makes me a somewhat credible advisor for the admission booklist.

Some words before giving the booklist for admission tests:

>>>I AM NOT SPONSORED OR BIASED BY ANY COACHING CENTRE, PUBLISHER, EDUCATIONAL PLATFORMS/ PAGES OR ONLINE COACHING.

Before and during the admission tests, my only goal was to get into the Law Department of the University of Dhaka.

Naturally, my prescribed booklist is going to be for Dhaka University's entrance exams as it is the only university that allows a student to sit only once in their admission tests. My suggestion is to give it your best shot in the DU exams (if you are a first-timer) as there is no option to retake the DU entrance tests. Be very regular and attentive in your classes and do not hesitate to ask questions to your teachers.

Additionally, it has been proved that almost all admission test toppers attend one or multiple coaching centres during their admission tests; alongside having an experienced mentor.

In my opinion, there is no perfect or one-size-fits-all type of booklist or guideline for admission tests. Additionally, the books that are required to be read vary widely based on what university exam you intend to sit for.

Bangla:

  • Coaching Sheets

In my opinion, the sheets from Focus University Admission Coaching are the best ones (though there are some mistakes here and there; this is the case with almost every coaching centre for humanities students in the country.

  • Ovizatri Bangla guide (For Bangla 1st and 2nd paper MCQs)

  • ATM (Bangla vocabulary)

  • Focus: Bangla Guide (For Bangla written segment)

English:

  • Coaching Sheets (Focus sheets are the best for English grammar)

  • UCC English supplement for English Vocabulary; available at UCC bookstores)

(Check for the updated ones as the English for Today book has changed contents)

  • Text Hacks (English written English 1 MCQs)

  • Master (English 2nd Paper for all universities except DU)

General Knowledge:

  • Coaching sheet (Focus coaching sheets are really good, though there may be some mistakes)

  • Recent GK Sheets from your coaching centre

OR/ AND

  • Recent Capsule (Zubair's GK)

  • basic GK (Must-have for the DU A unit admission test!)

  • -Joykoly Recent Affairs (All Red Cover; newsprint)

  • Mihir's GK Final Suggestion (Must buy before the DU admission tests!)

  • Updated BCS standard Bangladesh and world map (While studying general knowledge, lay the map on your study desk and study your general knowledge sheets/ books over that map. This way, you can instantly look at the map when you have to identify a particular location or any facts about a region; this also makes studying a bit less boring too!!!)

>>> I hope this booklist may be of help to some extent! Best wishes for your admission tests! Insha'Allah we shall meet as fellow students in the following year! break a leg!
